Rajya Sabha Polls: Political turmoil has intensified before the June 19 Rajya Sabha elections in Gujarat. After the resignation of three MLAs, the Congress party is going full vigilance. On Sunday, the Gujarat Congress has sent its 19 MLAs to live in a resort in Rajasthan. Congress sources said that the party is expected to transfer 26 MLAs to the resort located in Mount Abu, Rajasthan. Congress is ruled in Rajasthan and the party hopes that these MLAs will stay away from BJP’s horse-trading here.
The Congress has 65 MLAs in Gujarat, some of whom are already locked in different resorts. The party has taken this step after the resignation of two of its MLAs on 4 June. A day later, another MLA resigned from the party. This was the second round of resignations in the party. Only after the announcement of Rajya Sabha elections in March, four party MLAs resigned at that time.
In Abu Road, Gujarat Congress President Amit Chavda told reporters, ‘Due to the Coronavirus crisis, while the government should work to save the lives of the people, the government is using the public machinery to threaten and repurchase the people’s representatives. Our MLAs are staying here to consider the upcoming strategy.
The ruling BJP has 103 members in the state’s 183-member assembly and has fielded Abhay Bhardwaj, Ramilaben Bara and Narhari Amin in the Rajya Sabha elections. Having reduced the number of Congress members to 65, the party may find it difficult to win two Rajya Sabha seats, for which it has fielded senior leaders Bharat Singh Solanki and Shaktisinh Gohil. A Congress MLA said that Solanki is the second priority after Gohil.
Congress MLA Vikram Madam said, ‘All 65 MLAs are united. There is no internal factionalism in the Congress. Bharat Singh Solanki himself knows that he is the second candidate. He said, ‘This is the decision of the party. We will vote according to the instructions of the party. State Congress President Amit Bhai Chavda has also announced that Shakti Singh is the first candidate. The effective strength of the house is currently 172, as 10 seats are vacant due to court cases and resignations.
